7.3 Steeple to Steeple - St. Leger walk
In 1752, a horse race took place from the church steeple in Buttevant to the church steeple in Doneraile and as a consequence of this Colonel Anthony St. Leger founded the Doncaster St. Leger in 1776 which is the oldest of the classic flat races. It also initiated what is now referred to as 'point to point' racing in Ireland.
To commemorate the original event, a race took place in 1992 over this route and is now on record.
In order to carry out this walk, begin at the post office in Buttevant and walk directly from there to Doneraile, (6km) on rather a busy road to a cross-roads just north of Doneraile.
Turn left and take the first turn left (1km) at the signpost for Charleville, and after 100m turn left straight along the narrow road through Boherboy Cross-Roads to the Buttevant-Doneraile road. Follow the road back to Buttevant.
Remember, that the Buttevant/Doneraile Road is busy and the walk can be dangerous even for adults.
