Walk Type: (road)
Time:3 hrs
Distance:12 km

Start at the Post Office as indicated in Walk 7.1 and follow the Historic Walk as far as Ballybeg Priory and Columbarium. After visiting these retrace your steps past the turn for the disused bridge and continue east towards Doneraile.

Turn left at the first cross-roads, straight through the next cross-roads and over the Awbeg River at Cahermee Bridge.

Continue through the next two cross-roads of Ballyellis and Boherboy to Kilcolman West.

Turn left and follow the winding road back to Buttevant crossing the four arched bridge at the entrance to the town.

The old bridge over the Awbeg River in Buttevant is a curiosity (Blake's Bridge). Many years ago it was widened, but not too much. It now presents two different faces. The arches at the south side are pointed, while those on the north, the more modern, are round.

The original breadth was about one-third of the present. The masonry is antique in character and similar to the Franciscan Friary. From Buttevant Bridge, you can see Buttevant Mill and the Weir. Almost certainly the mill and weir had been in existence for some hundreds of years before the Normans came.

There is nothing surprising at the selection of the site where the Barry Castle was built and where Buttevant Castle now stands in that the swift flowing Awbeg River below the weir offered defensive protection as well as assuring the water supply to the castle.

The modern Mill was built in 1810 by Sir James Anderson. In style it is castled and is like the castle nearby. It was furnished with machinery of superior construction and capable of manufacturing 20,000 barrels of flour annually.

Presently the Mill is being operated by Greens of Cork, who took over in May, 1976.

(For those who wish to take a shorter walk, turn left at Ballyellis Cross-roads on the main Buttevant-Doneraile Road and return over the bridge to your car. Distance: 9km Time: 2 hours)
