From Mitchelstown, drive through Kilbeheny, past the turn for Galty Castle and Galtymore, until you reach the main gates of Glengarra Wood.
Turn left and enter the wood car park. (Should you so wish, at the carpark there is a waymarker numbered walk around the woods for approximately 4km.
This is a nice family walk, in which many of the trees and shrubs are identified, terminating at the old hunting lodge, which is now a youth hostel).
The youth hostel in Glengarra Wood was built by Lord Lismore, of Shanbally Castle, near Clogheen, Co. Tipperary. It was used as a hunting lodge on his estate until it was handed over to An Oige by the two Miss Pole-Carews.
From the carpark, walk up the road through Glengarra Wood, parallel to the Burncourt River, until you reach the beautiful little hostel, set in the Glen.
Pass by the hostel, which is on the far side of the river, cross the small bridge, and take an immediate turn left. Continue up the forestry road, with the river and woods now on your left hand side. Cross the fence which separates Glengarra from the lower regions of the Galtees.
On your right you will notice a horseshoe shaped glen with a major stone mound on its peak, known as O'Loughlan's Castle.
Taking a slightly north-east direction, climb up the left wing of the horseshoe. It is rather steep and you need good quality clothes, boots and perhaps a walking stick for support.
Take your time and enjoy the view. The climb will take approximately one hour and from the cairn of rocks called O'Loughlan's Castle, you will have a fine view of Tipperary and in the distance, the Aherlow House Hotel. On the far side of the hill, below the ridge, one can see Muskry Lake and a number of valleys, fields and woods. Having taken note of the rock formations, walk south along the ridge down to the fence and back down the road to your car.
