Time:3 hrs
Distance:13 km

The Araglin Valley is a beautiful valley which borders the Araglin River from its origin in the Knockmealdown Mountains to the River Blackwater. The area is full of character and beautiful walks, which we hope you will enjoy. Three of the walks include segments of the Blackwater Way (Avondhu Way). The Araglin River rises in the Three Doons.

There is an ancient legend associated with those hills. About 200 years ago a man known as Willie Brennan robbed the rich to help the poor. At one stage he robbed the Mayor of Cashel and hid the money in the Three Doons. He was captured and hung for the crime.

Before his execution he was asked where he hid the money and he claimed it was hidden in the Three Doons. To this day it has not been found.

Park your car at the pub near the Kingston Bridge and follow the road signposted to Ballyporeen.

This is a steady climb and at the sign that indicates Ballyporeen straight ahead, and Araglin behind, turn right onto a narrow road leading to Clogheen. At this corner, in order to shorten the walk there is a bungalow across from which there is room to park a car.

Keep right at the first fork and continue on through the next cross-roads. At the next fork keep left and follow the lovely rising road into the Knockmealdown Mountains. Along the way the road goes through 'S' bends over little bridges spanning meandering streams coming down the mountains.

Continue on this road which rises up towards the forests. Take time to look back over the beautiful Araglin Valley, Ballysaggart and in the distance, Fermoy, Castlelyons and the Nagle Mountains. At the top plateau, you will meet moorland on the right and a forest on the left. At the beginning of the forest you will see the yellow waymarker of the Avondhu Way.

Turn left, climb over the stile and follow the waymarkers over the mountain until you join a mountain track which eventually becomes a road along the base of the Knockmealdowns.

Along this way you will pass through a turf cutting area known locally as the Moon because it is so remote. On a clear day, one can see Dungarvan Harbour in the distance. Follow this road which affords some beautiful views south over the valleys.

When you reach a 'T' junction, turn left and follow the road down past the signpost and bungalow, to your car.

(Should one wish to start at the bungalow, the total distance for the loop is 10km and will take 2.5 hours)
