Blackwater Valley lies in the South Of Ireland and boasts a wealth of beautiful and varied walks. This website lists a number of those walks with accompanying maps, historical notes and local information.

These walks include mountain and hillside walks as well as river walks and town walks. The walks are designed in "loops" to facilitate starting and finishing at the same point. Mountain ranges such as the Galty, Nagles and Knockmealdown are included.

While each of the walks are moderate in length we have made use of a long distance walking route which runs from Clogheen in County Tipperary, through County Waterford, the ‘V’ Gap in the Knockmealdowns, through Kilworth, Fermoy, Ballyhooly and on past Mallow to Millstreet. This walk, known locally as the "Blackwater Way" (or the "Avondhu Way"), was designed and set-up by Christy Roche, a local geographer and walker. Long distance walks, by convention, are indicated by yellow hiker waymarkers with arrows.

While the Waymarked walks are mostly for experienced walkers or trackers, they have been planned, particularly in the Blackwater Valley, so that in the right conditions, there is no reason why anyone should not be capable of walking any of the routes at their own pace.

Walking as an activity in Ireland has now become an extremely popular source of enjoyment as evidenced by the many new books and periodicals describing this sport. We hope that this webiste both encourages and assists you to experience and enjoy our beautiful countryside.
